Lower School Curriculum

Our Lower School pupils enjoy high-quality teaching in core subjects supplemented by specialist teaching in sports, modern languages and music.

Our rich Lower School curriculum is designed to help our boys and girls grow in knowledge, skills and understanding. As well as the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Computing, pupils are encouraged to engage with a range of others so that they discover new ways to connect with the wider world and build a lifelong love of learning. These subjects include History, Geography, Religious Studies and PSHCE (Physical, Social, Health and Citizenship Education), as well as PE, Games, French, Music and Computing – all five of which are taught by subject-specialist teachers.

All of our teachers are committed to promoting a positive learning environment, in which individual pupil progress is of paramount importance. We have high expectations of our boys and girls and we tailor their education on a personal basis – providing differentiated tasks to stretch pupils in targeted ways. This is made easier by our small classes, which allow our teachers to know each pupil well and ensure that they progress at just the right speed, and by the fact that in Years 3 to 6 we set our children for lessons in Maths and English. As our boys and girls pass through the Junior School we also prepare them to take the 11+ examination – with consistently strong results.

Our curriculum is enhanced by a wide range of extracurricular opportunities, and we take great care to weave spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) into every aspect of school life. That way we can ensure that all of our boys and girls grow to become fully rounded individuals, able to understand and embrace the fundamental values that hold our society together – democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.
