Our rich Lower School curriculum is designed to help our boys and girls grow in knowledge, skills and understanding. As well as the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Computing, pupils are encouraged to engage with a range of others so that they discover new ways to connect with the wider world and build a lifelong love of learning. These subjects include History, Geography, Religious Studies and PSHCE (Physical, Social, Health and Citizenship Education), as well as PE, Games, French, and Music – all of which are taught by subject-specialist teachers.
All of our teachers are committed to promoting a positive learning environment, in which individual pupil progress is of paramount importance. We have high expectations of our boys and girls and we tailor their education on a personal basis – providing differentiated tasks to stretch pupils in targeted ways, with many of our pupils working one year ahead of what is expected of their age group. This is made easier by our small classes, which allow our teachers to know each pupil well and ensure that they progress at just the right speed. We believe that children respond well to being challenged and extended, as long as they feel comfortable and supported.
Our individualised focus reaches beyond the classroom to take in the worlds of sport, music, and the arts whilst encouraging a strong community spirit, global mind-set and understanding of others. As a school we strive for every pupil to achieve their very best in terms of academic achievement, but we also firmly believe that education should develop children’s character and prepare them for the future. This is achieved through both our character development programme, The Wellesley Award, and PSHE lessons.
