Academic excellence is at the heart of everything we do at Colchester Prep & High School. From EYFS onwards, we equip children with the tools, skills, and confidence to reach their full potential, whether preparing for the 11+ exam or applying for a scholarship to our highly sought-after Senior School.
We take pride in our pupils’ success in both the 11+ examinations and Senior School scholarships. Our pastoral care team supports children throughout assessments and interviews, ensuring they stay happy and manage exam pressures effectively.
HOW WE PREPARE YOUR CHILD
PERSONALISED SUPPORT FOR EVERY CHILD
Our curriculum prepares children for scholarships and the 11+ exam in a supportive and integrated way, ensuring they develop the necessary skills well ahead of deadlines. Much of this learning is embedded within mainstream lessons, with open-ended differentiation allowing all pupils to extend and deepen their understanding. Group work, presentations, and collaborative tasks further build confidence and analytical skills.
From Year 5, children also join our Prep Aspire Higher Club and 11+ Booster Sessions, providing targeted preparation for the 11+ and scholarship assessments.

IN THE CLASSROOM
Our Prep children have a broad, enriching and immersive curriculum ensuring a strong and broad academic foundation.
Within English and Mathematics lessons there is a dedicated focus on mastery teaching, stretching and challenging the children to further deepen their knowledge and learning skills.
Problem solving and verbal reasoning tasks build deep learners and help develop methodical thinkers. ESB (English Speaking Board) is offered to allow children to build confidence and presentation skills.
YEAR 5 & 6 ASPIRE HIGHER CLUB
Our Prep Aspire Higher Club is offered to pupils from Year 5 and covers a range of topics and skills.
These include exam technique, speaking and listening, presentation skills, 11+ preparation (Y5 Aspire Higher Club only), and interview technique.
We also look at current affairs and invite guest speakers in to our club. The club does sometimes require a small amount of ‘home learning’ to supplement our activities.
YEAR 5 11+ BOOSTER SESSIONS
These sessions are offered from the Spring Term for Year 5 pupils who are registering for the 11+ examinations in the following September.
These sessions allow for dedicated time looking at past papers, mark schemes and examination technique specifically tailored for the 11+ examination.
This then culminates in a 11+ mock examination where the children sit a recent 11+ examination paper under exam conditions and receive tailored feedback for each individual.
SPECIALIST TEACHING AND ENRICHMENT
Pupils in our Prep School enjoy specialist teaching in Music, Languages, PE, Drama and Computer Science and a wide range of extra-curricular clubs and accreditation opportunities.
Together with our Wellesley Character Development Programme, our curriculum encourages them to develop the talents and skills required to meet the criteria of our subject specific Year 7 Scholarships.
Colchester Prep & High School Scholarships
A WIDE VARIETY OF SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE
Colchester Prep & High School are pleased to offer a range of scholarships to prospective Year 6 and Year 7 pupils.
In Year 5, we offer a 3 Year Academic Scholarship to Year 6 pupils demonstrating outstanding achievement in English and Mathematics. Or you can apply in Year 6 for a(n) English, Mathematics, Science, Music & Performance, Digital & Creative Art, Technology. STEAM or Sport Scholarships for entry into Year 7 of our Senior School.
