School allocation day is always an anxious time for parents, but during the current school closures, you might be having doubts about your choices, about what happens next or you might just want someone to speak to. At Colchester High School, although the physical doors are closed, we are very much still here to help you and your child through the process of starting school.
Reception at Colchester High School
Choosing a school for your child when they approach five years of age can be a daunting time. But at Colchester High School we are here to hold their hand – and yours!
We pride ourselves on giving our Reception pupils the best start to their educational journey. By providing a structured formal education supplemented with a wide range of extra-curricular activities, the vast majority of our pupils exceed their Early Learning Goals at the end of Reception, placing them one year ahead academically and giving them the confidence and motivation to excel throughout their School life. We clearly adhere to the belief that the quality of a child’s learning in Reception can play a major role in their future.
Our Reception classroom is beautiful, bright and spacious, equipped with everything a little learner needs to make every day special! A separate outdoor area, specifically for our EYFS children, allows for exploring and building new friendships.
Our class sizes are small, with dedicated, enthusiastic, well qualified class teachers and a dedicated teaching assistant. Our pupils receive specialist teaching in PE, ICT, Music and Modern Foreign Languages. One benefit of an all-through School.
Extracurricular activities such as Forest School, exciting school trips and visitors, and our Character Development Programme will expand your child’s horizons, develop their confidence and prepare them for the future.
Our success can be measured by our excellent results at the end of Reception.

72% of the Reception pupils passed the Year 1 Phonics Test one year ahead with one pupil achieving a top score of 40
