On Wednesday 15th November Colchester High School hosted the Junior ISA East Gala (School year 4-6) and on Wednesday 22nd November, the Senior ISA East Gala (School year Yr 7-13) at Crown Pools in Ipswich. At stake for each event winner was a place in the East Anglian team for the ISA National Swimming Championships which will take place on Sunday 21st January 2018 in the Olympic Pool, at the London Aquatics Centre in Stratford.
Races were held in: 50 Freestyle, Breaststroke and Backstroke (Yr 4-8), 100m Freestyle, Breaststroke and Backstroke (Yr 9/10 & Yr 11/12/13), with 50m Butterfly (Yr 6-13) and a 200m Individual Medley (Yr 9-13).
20 ISA schools from all over Suffolk, Essex, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire took part with Littlegarth School (Gt Horkesley) winning the Junior event and Colchester High School winning the overall Senior event. Individual winners: Junior Girls (Ursuline Preparatory School), Junior Boys (Littlegarth School), Senior Girls (Colchester High School) and Senior Boys (Colchester High School).
Adam Dowson, Head of PE at Colchester High School organised both events with the Year 10 & 11 GCSE PE pupils and staff from Colchester High School on behalf of the ISA EAST. Mr Dowson said
“It was great to see so many schools in attendance at both of our galas. It ensures that we as a region will be able to take the strongest team possible to the national championships and give so many pupils the opportunity to experience such a great sport on the highest stage at the Olympic Pool. Last year we were able to celebrate a number of national ISA champions with several records going. Let’s hope we can be as successful if not more so this year. We are of course incredibly proud of all our own pupils who did so well in the regional gala and would like to specifically congratulate Georgia Bleck, who won both the Yr 8 girls Breaststroke and Freestyle and William, who took first place in both the Yr 9/10 boys Butterfly and Individual Medley. William also broke the 1 minute barrier in the 100m Open Freestyle (pictured).”
