Modern Foreign Languages Department

Modern Foreign Languages at Colchester High School

French is taught in the juniors, from Year 3 upwards, with one hour's provision per week from a specialist trained language teacher.  Our scheme of work takes a topic-based approach and aims to build confidence in speaking and listening skills, primarily.  We use a wide range of materials from many sources, which include songs, raps, word games, playground games, role-plays and pair-work activities to incorporate all learning styles.  The emphasis is on fun and interaction!  We also cover elements of French culture, including French Sport, the Tour de France, Christmas, French towns and tourist attractions, cheese-tasting, traditional songs, Carnival and pancakes!

In Key Stage 3 we follow the Expo scheme for French.  Provision increases to about 2 hours per week, also from specialist language teachers.

In Year 8 all students take up German and receive 2 hours per week in this language, as well as continuing their French studies.

In Key Stage 4 students have the option to take French and / or German to GCSE, Edexcel board.  From 2011, all GCSEs in Modern Languages will involve 60% Speaking and Listening and 40% Reading and Writing.  Thus, the emphasis will still be on promoting interactive skills.

The Language Department comprises four specialist language teachers, two of which are part-time.
