The History Department
Colchester High School has a thriving History Department run by a young enthusiastic historian. The History Department strives to develop the students at Colchester High School as confident individuals. Our curriculum endeavours to do so by developing individuals who have a sense of self-worth enabling them to make informed choices, become increasingly independent and open to the excitement and inspiration offered by human achievements.
We start in Year 7 by considering the question 'What is History?' which is soon followed by studying 'The Battle of Hastings' and incorporating a trip to Battle Abbey. In Year 8 we study the 'Era of Revolutions' looking at revolutions from across the world. In Year 9 we study World Wars 1 and 2 and the inter war years and include a memorable trip to Ypres and the Somme.
The curriculum followed at Key Stage 3 provides a sound basis for studying the GCSE syllabus (AQA specification B). GCSE history is provided as an option subject chosen towards the end of Year 9 and in recent years, has proven to be the most popular of the non-compulsory options offered.
On the extra curricular side the Department offers an Archaeology Club for Years 7-11 which has already inspired some pupils to get out their metal detectors and go searching in their garden!!!
