What is the Nursery Curriculum?

The Nursery Curriculum is designed to encourage the development of the whole child and aid in the creation of a solid foundation for the growth of a happy and successful pupil. Emphasis is placed on enhancing skills, knowledge and understanding in aspects such as mathematics, language and literacy, emotional and social development, knowledge of the world, physical development and creativity.

How are children taught in the junior forms?

In Years 3 and 4, children are taught mostly by their form teachers in mixed ability groups. In Years 5 and 6, children are taught by specialist subject teachers and are in sets for English and Maths.

How are children taught in the senior forms?

Pupils are taught by subject specialists and there is setting in some subjects, according to achievement.

What teaching methods are used?

Members of staff endeavour to combine the best of traditional teaching methods with modern educational ideas.

Do you cater for special needs?

We have a Learning Support Department.

Does the school have a Parents' Association?

The CHSA arranges fundraising and social events for staff, parents and pupils.

Do the children use computers at the School?

Our two computer suites are designed for pupils of all ages to have access to computers.

What about Music and Drama?

Besides class music and drama lessons, many pupils learn to play a musical instrument. They are encouraged to take part in drama productions and concerts.

There is an extensive range of clubs and activities at Colchester High School.

What is the provision for Art and Design?

All the children have the opportunity to participate in art and craft activities, both in lesson and clubs, leading to pupils achieving a high level of success in GCSE examinations.

What is discipline like at Colchester High School?

We have high expectations of all pupils and this includes behaviour, dress and manners. The staff will intervene to correct inappropriate behaviour and we have a happy school that seeks to reward and praise its children for their friendly and caring attitude to others.
